CELLOPHAX
It
is also a regenerated form of cellulose which is a transparent film commonly used in or day to day life. It is obtained from
viscose solution. In the manufacturing process the viscose solution is extruded into a thin fil and pass through a bath of
sulphuric acid, ammonium sulphate &sodium sulphate. Owing this proess, the xanthate groups are eliminated and the
cellulose is precipitated subsequently, the film stream through another bath containing glycerol will be absorbed by the film,
in turn serves as a good plasticizer.
Cellulose Nitrate
Nitrocellulose is obtained by the nitration of cellulose.
Depending upon the degree of nitration, cellulose nitrate has different application. It is used as an explosive (gun cotton),
used in photographic films. It can also used to make moulded decorative articles, fountain pens, frames of spectacles, etc.
Cellulose Acetate
Another important cellulose plastic is cellulose acetate.
It is produced b y the action of acetic anhydride on cellulose in the presence of sulphuric acid or perchloric acid catalyst.
Cell-OH + (CH3CO)2O
gives Cell—O—COCH3 + CH3COOH
Product obtained by the complete acetylation is called primarycellulose
acetate or cellulose triacetate. This cellulose acetate plastic is sed for the manufacture of
plastic. Partial saponification of primary cellulose acetate leads to the formation of a secondary cellulose acetate
which is a impotant plastic used for the manufacture of nonflammable safety cine
